I know this question sounds odd but.... it looks like the people in this group are all consultants looking to conntect with a real sales manager so they/we can tell them about our own company. Please chime in if you are a real VP sales/sales manager/CSO. :-)
I think its a valid question, so here is another answer.
I was a Sales Manager at IBM, Xerox and then Wang where I was a Region Manager, then Country VP Sales. There I realized that, contrary to being told that there was a sales problem, in fact I inherited a sales management problem as measured by:
o Under Goal Sales Results (Goal was $10 million per month)
o 50% Sales People Turnover/Year
o Wildly optimistic Sales Forecasts
o Managers with no Plans or even worse, Planning to Fail
o No common Processes & Tools
o Channel Conflicts.
So after growing sales for my country by about 30% when worldwide sales were declining, I thought that I owed it to myself to try the same techniques, tools processes etc for myself as a Consultant (see case study at http://www.performax.com/Spencer/PXCase1.html )
So in summary, some of us are both ex Sales Managers and now Consultants, selling our Services to others.
Hope that helps answer your question, Regards, Peter M
I've gotten a lot of questions lately about Hunters vs Farmers, so I decided to write an article on the differences, as well as how to
organize a sales force to support these two distinct roles.
I'd love to get some feedback from the group on w…

Trish,
I am 100% on board with what you just said... I think the key is really understanding what Skip means when he says hard sell. To me there is a big difference between asking for business and giving a high pressure sales pitch. To me it's kind…
Hard sell to me means "What will it take to get you into this car today?" kind of language. Not sure that works anymore but at the same time I don't believe being aggressive is a negative. I just won a large deal over a competitor and when I asked w…
Skip,
It is not a style I would personally use or advocate. I don't think customers in general like to be pressured into a sale and I think it is bad for overall reputation and repeat sales. However, I can also say I have seen it work, but just bec…
Does the hardsell still work in this day and age? Do customers buy from aggressive salespeople? Is it a viable sales strategy? What's the price of using hard selling tactics?
