Sales Management 2.0

A few days ago I wrote a post about the importance of attitude in selling. I ended the post by saying opportunity is everywhere you look, the real problem is learning to recognize it when you see it. Today I am going to share with you some more thoughts on how attitude in conjunction with good selling habits can drive success. Most of you have read articles about the Law of Attraction and how it can mysteriously provide you with whatever it is you seek. Part of me wants to say this principle is a bunch of cr@p and that there is no real merit to it, but there is another part of me that believes it to be true, so I am going to share with you the law of attraction for the non-new age person.

I read a great article by Rolando Pastrana on startup.biz this morning called What is the law of attraction? and he got me thinking about a few things I really wanted to share. First, he cleared up some misconceptions about the law of attraction that were primarily responsible for my thinking "This is a bunch of cr@p!", then he lays out some excellent examples of the law of attraction in action.
Here is my favorite excerpt from his article:
"You can't just sit on your tush in your living room imagining checks coming into your mailbox. You won't have that living room for long. You have to ACT on your thoughts. You have to walk out your door and be pro-active in making things happen to get what you want in life. "Doing" has to follow "Thinking.""
For me he hit some very valid points, and when we look back to the story of the shoe salesmen, the first one got off the plane and was defeated because in his mind he was looking for reasons that he would not be successful. Before he even pitched a single client he was defeated. The second salesman saw opportunity everywhere he looked. He was seeking opportunity and found it.
Both of these men were "attracting" what it was they were seeking. The first was seeking obstacles and he found them and the second was seeking opportunity and he found that as well.
You can not just "think a happy thought" and immediately find success. It is attitude in conjunction with action that will ultimately lead you down the path of success.
When dealing with your sales team whether you are a top performer, or a manager it is extremely important that you focus you thought and energy on the positive, constantly focusing on opportunity, and ways you can succeed instead of on the negative.
That does not mean we do not share bad news. What it means is we need to share it differently. We need to focus on the issue and frame it as an opportunity for new business.

In the end Rolando and I are both really saying the same thing in our own unique ways...

What are some ways we could use the law of attraction as managers to drive additional business?

-Brad

Hi Brad and new found friends at SM20

I would be delighted to do something for your guys around the law of attraction.
A bit like Skip I was very sceptical of this material a few years ago. Then for various reasons I decided to study it in detail (I guess that’s the cynical scientist in me)
Following Brian Tracy’s suggestion that studying for an hour a day will make you an expert in anything you choose in a very short space of time.
At the time I was less esoteric and more interested in winning at all costs. I was struggling and needed some answers and strategies. Which it provided. It also enabled me to acheive some very significant financial goals and to win a couple of awards which at the time where very important to me and my family I digress.

Rather than just write or record something. Perhaps anyone interested could fill out a really short survey with any burning questions. I can then tailor it specifically to what you guys want to hear about? In fact I will record an MP3 they can download and listen to whenever. Email me Brad and let me know.

On Skips question about what is the law of attraction. A brief answer. I can go into much more detail later.

Ok where could I start? Well the law of attraction and the law of vibration are so closely linked it makes sense to talk about the two.
These particular laws are what the really successful people in life use. Either consciously or unconsciously. In fact I will guarantee that you have used them on numerous occasions yourself.

These particular laws are classed as universal laws. Just as the law of gravity is a physical law. The universal laws are non physical or mental laws. I would suspect many people have read some of Brian Tracy’s material and he talks about the law of cause and effect.

Now some people reading this might be thinking…oh yeah*!!

This is totally understandable. Hey that was my exact reaction a few years ago when I first came across this material.

One of the easiest ways to think about it is that a few hundred years ago everybody thought the world was flight. Then someone discovered it wasn’t. Now the fact is the world had never been flat. We just didn’t realise it.

As human beings we are growing and developing all the time as we move through the centuries. So naturally we will start to discover and realise what possibility is out there for us to utilise.
OK I better get back on track. The implications of the Law of attraction and Law of Vibration are founded in the study of quantum physics.

Everything on the planet is actually energy vibrating at different frequencies and at different speeds. Depending on the speed and vibration of something depends on whether you can see it or not. E.g. I am sitting typing on a laptop. I am surrounded by radio, cell and mobile phone waves etc.
No needs to take my word for it, a number of Nobel Prize winning physicists have confirmed this.
It makes sense therefore that we are energy as well. Now here is something important so are our thoughts.

So here we are as a human being with our bodies and thoughts. Everything is vibrating. Just like us the universe is made up of atoms and subatomic particles that all vibrate. So we are vibrational beings living in a vibrational universe.
Makes sense?
If you look at an electromagnetic spectrum (I have not tested though if you Google it I am sure you will find an image) you realise that our physical senses can only perceive a very small fraction of what energy is out there. In fact less than 1%

Taking this a little further;

The law of Attraction states that;

We will attract into our experience (energy field) that with which we are in vibrational resonance.

Now most of us can grasp this when you think of the vibration of a crystal glass. However most people don’t appreciate what they are vibrating through their thoughts and feelings and what that is attracting. (Cast you mind back to school days and the science lab -like energy attracts to each other)

Are you still with me? So thoughts are energy, and they create different kinds of vibration. Add into this that when they are mixed with the emotion they create they become magnetically charged. Making each one of us a powerful magnet. For the thoughts we are sending out.

Have you noticed how when you are having a great day things just get better and better? Its back to cause and effect because you are sending out a positive vibration
You bring more positive things in. Unfortunately the reverse is true.
People also pick up your energy. I am sure many of us have had the experience of our other half coming home. We know something is wrong and they haven’t said a word! Yep we have picked up their vibration/ frequency.

This takes us all the way back to Skips question. So if you if you think positively you will be at a certain vibration and things will be attracted into you. If you think negative thoughts (e.g. doubts, fear, worry, about things you don’t want) they will be brought in as well.

Now in a nutshell that is it! Ok so let’s very briefly explore the implications.

If you are feeling down low, concerned worried. You are in a particular vibration.
Shift it as quickly as you can. That could be standing up. Take a walk (top tip physical exercise changes your vibration) listen to music. Think about when you got your first job, big account or fell in love and got married or the joy of your first child being born. I guarantee this will start to shift your energy.

If you are in a positive state. Yippee. Ramp it up. Think about all the great things you have done. All the wonderful things that are happening and going to happen. That will keep your energy at a higher level.

The law of attraction doesn’t respond to what we want, but only to the energy and vibration we are sending out- and it works perfectly all the time.

Now this is very top line and there is quite a lot more to it. I would love to do something for your Guys Brad if they think they would get some value from it. Just let me know.

Can someone define "The Law of Attraction?" for us? How is it different from "positive thinking?"

Denise,
Thanks for chiming in on this topic. I was hoping to draw a little more insight out of you if I can.
I would say from looking at the comments you have Tim on your side of the fence, with skip on the other, and myself in the middle saying it's not really cr@p IF you act on those thoughts. From reading your blog I would assume it is safe to say you have more expertise on this topic than any of us.
Would you mind sharing some suggestions as to how sales people and managers specifically can use law of attraction to drive business?

Thanks for starting a debate Brad an an interesting one at that. The poularity of the Law of attraction ( The book the secret is or has been in the top 5 bestsellers on Amazon since its launch) really took off with the film The Secret. Which was great in raising awareness. Though a little low on fact and evidence.

The challenge is there are a number of cynics. Which is normal when folks don't take time to explore ask questions and understand. The law of attraction ( a better description is actually the law of vibration) works wether we like it or not. Just have a look at a few books on quantum physics The biology of belief is a great book to read if you are confused and want some evidence.

I have a lot of experience and evidence that I have attracted circumstances and events into my life. I am not saying I understand it totally because I don't. Though it is a great comfort to know I can take control of my life.

Here's to controlling how I vibrate and attract!!

Thanks

I find the law of attraction at work every time I play golf. When I get on a good streak I start thinking about how I am playing "over my head" and that a couple of bad holes must be looming in my near future. Funny how I always end up having a streak of bad holes shortly thereafter. I need to work on believing that I deserve success on the golf course and I'm sure my scores will improve.

There's a lot of wisdom in what you're saying, Brad. Especially to reframe your staff's complaints into opportunity statements. And I, too, believe that you will find whatever it is you are looking for.
Brad Trnavsky Comment by Brad Trnavsky on August 26, 2008 at 7:26pm
I think if you look at what I was saying in the beginning of the post I think all by itself it is a bunch of cr@p too.
Thinking good thoughts without putting action behind them is worthless. As a manager the way I use the law of attraction is to consistently and constantly re-frame all of my staffs gripes and complaints into opportunity statements. I put a lot of effort into setting them up to expect everything to go right.
The one thing I do believe to be true is that you will find whatever it is you are looking for. If you call all of your leads and expect them to be cr@p they will be, if you expect to get good results you will. Two reps calling the same list can have dramatically different results based on nothing more than the attitude they bring to the task.
So while I do not think sitting on your duff and thinking a happy thought will bring you success I do think positive expectations in partnership with the correct habits will net better results in the long run.
I would also say that you can use law of attraction to influence your teams morale in the same way. If you storm around the office like a jerk belittling everyone and telling doom and gloom stories of failure your team will probably meet your expectation. On the other hand if you are honest but strive to bring out the best in people you will be more likely to make your goals. Again, it's not a magic bullet... you still need to hold people accountable to goals and commitments. Its the manner in which you do that that will have to change. Correct attitude in sync with correct management activities = success. Either one without the other is a plan for suboptimization.

For me, the law of attraction has limited value. But I do believe in positive thinking, and expecting good things to happen. I'm not sure how sales managers can drive additional business with the law of attraction because I don't necessarily buy into the theory.
